BEAUTY IN GIVING:
"KATUWANG: A fight against Child Mortality"

THE PROBLEM:
Infant and Child Mortality refers to the death of infants and children under the age of five. But despite the advances, the cost of inaction is alarmingly high and the current pace of the world will not meet the United Nations’ fourth Millennium Development Goal target by 2015, which is two-thirds reduction of 1990’s mortality level of 12.7 million children. If the global community does not take immediate action, 35 million more children could die between 2015 and 2028.
In the Philippines, half of Filipino children who die due to birth complications, pneumonia, birth asphyxia, diarrhea and malaria before their fifth birthday are newborns from isolated and disadvantaged areas but are also found in urban settings populated by informal settlers.
The complications could be prevented or treated with access to simple and affordable interventions. I will help implement solutions I have learned from my Nursing background and my home province of Nueva Vizcaya’s isolated and disadvantaged area is the first destination; hence the establishment of my foundation, KATUWANG: A FIGHT AGAINST CHILD MORTALITY.

THE FUNDRAISING:
Together with the support of my family, friends, colleagues, mentors and the Nueva Vizcaya Action Group Inc, I’m currently raising funds through sponsorships, private donations and a FUN RUN entitled “RUN AGAINST CHILD MORTALITY” to be held on September 19, 2015 in Nueva Vizcaya.
Registration fees shall go straight to the Health Trainings and Medical Assistance to be done in our chosen rural communities and it is rest assured that we’ll organize more fundraising events in the future such as Charity Dinners, Fashion Shows and Concerts for a Cause so we can ensure a brighter future for these children.

THE SOLUTION AND SUSTAINABILITY:
The mission shall be summarized in three mantras:
We EDUCATE then we VACCINATE.
Together with my province’s Volunteer Medical Doctors and Nurses, we educated families regarding PROPER NUTRITION INTAKE intertwined with regular PHYSICAL EXAMINATION of the children living in the two barangays we focused on. We’ll keep a HEALTH STATUS RECORD and focus on quick assessment of respiration, circulation, temperature, neurological status, and screening for anomalies or disease that might mandate emergency treatment.
And based from the results of the physical examination, we scheduled a VACCINATION DRIVE. Infants and children need vaccines to give them acquired immunity to a particular disease. Our Medical Doctors will guide families in determining what vaccines their children need.
We CLEAN then we FEED.
With the help of our local government, we scheduled a regular ENVIRONMENTAL SANITATION PROGRAM that shall focus on the following: (1) CLEAN AND SAFE WATER SUPPLY- by providing WATER FILTERS per household and (2) CLEAN AND SAFE SURROUNDINGS- by implementing a general CLEAN and GREEN initiative to be scheduled monthly.
And to ensure that the children are not malnourished, we already started a 120-day feeding program based on Department of Education and Department of Social Welfare and Development’s project.
WE SUSTAIN:
Nueva Vizcaya is considered the citrus capital of the Philippines and very well known are the “Vizcaya oranges” which are harvested from July to January every year. We’re helping mothers from the two barangays organize mini stalls in the nearest marketplace so they can sell the best citrus we can get from cooperatives in contact with the farmers who produce the oranges. Through this livelihood project, their financial stability can help support a child’s development.

THE FUTURE:
Prevention is better than cure and we are more than willing to monitor the abovementioned solutions. In line with United Nations’ vision, let us do our share and help fight Infant and Child Mortality because they are our world’s masterpiece… they are the voice in our silence… they are the future.
We cannot save the world in an instant, but we can make a difference.
