Selamat malam! The little kid in me burst out today because we went to the S A F A R I! I was so excited to see the giraffes!!! My friends used to tease me that I was a giraffe because of my long neck. Take note: not a swan-like neck.. a giraffe's neck! I also loved the LEOPARDS because they are the most gorgeous cats (everyone knows I love cats!). But aside from enjoying the company of the animals up close (we were riding a mini bus), we had a real eye-opener today. Many of the animals in the safari are endangered species. You may not think you can help because they are out in the wild or in a conservation park but you can help out whether it be a big or small effort. The important thing is, you helped. Here's a little teaser of the animals you saw and I'll be posting information on what you can do to help
LEOPARDS.
There are about 30 subspecies but a lot of them are slowly becoming endangered. One reason is because they are being hunted for their BONES, SKIN/FUR and LARGE ORGANS. They use a lot of this for traditional asian medicine or like for the skin, to use for carpets, bags, coats, etc. Another reason would be that humans are pushing their livestock further into the habitats of leopards. Overgrazing damages the grasslands and leaves less food for the wild goats and sheep. This lessens these animals and leaves no prey for the leopards. The leopards tend to aim for the livestock. The farmer will of course, take revenge on the leopards.

Today, there are only about 2,000-3,000 leopards left in the world.
While doing research I found out that earlier this year, it was confirmed that the CLOUDED LEOPARD is indeed EXTINCT in Taiwan. This majestic animal has become extinct because of common factors that lead to leopards decline: illegal hunting and human encroachment or gradual advance into a habitat.

THE BAD NEWS
It is already critically endangered with only around 30 of them left in the world. Agriculture and villages surround the natural habitat of the leopards which makes it easy for villages to hunt not only the leopards for their skins and such, but also the leopard's prey in the area. In China, where the Amur Leopards are located, prey is scarce and it is not sufficient enough for the tigers and leopards.

THE GOOD NEWS
"**WWF works with local communities, regional authorities, government and other non-governmental organizations to save the Amur leopard and ensure the long-term conservation of the region.

**WWF implements programs to stop the illegal trade in Amur leopard parts. Together with TRAFFIC, the world’s largest wildlife trade monitoring network, they help governments enforce domestic and international trade restrictions on Amur leopard products. Amur leopards are listed on CITES Appendix I, prohibiting all commercial trade in the species.

**WWF monitors Amur leopard populations and its habitat. Their camera traps have often yielded amazing results, allowing the world to catch a glimpse the world’s rarest wild cat. They also work to increase the population of leopard prey like roe deer, sika deer and wild boar including releasing such deer into new reserves in China to provide founder animals to rebuild prey populations.

**This work includes increasing areas of protected land in both Russia and China, reducing illegal and unsustainable logging practices, and facilitating trade between companies committed to responsible forestry practices.
