Viết trên tạp chí Clinical Oncology mới đây, các tác giả cho biết nghiên cứu này đã định lượng mối liên quan giữa HPV với ung thư họng, và cho ra kết quả "ấn tượng".
HPV từ lâu được xem là là nguyên nhân chính gây ung thư cổ tử cung, lây truyền qua đường sinh dục hoặc quan hệ đường miệng (oral sex). Có tới 100 loại virus HPV. Hầu hết mọi người đều nhiễm phải virus này ở một thời điểm nào đó trong đời, nhưng trong phần lớn trường hợp, hệ miễn dịch sẽ bảo vệ cơ thể hiệu quả.
Có 2 chủng HPV chủ yếu gây nên ung thư, là HPV-16 và HPV-8. Trong đó, chủng HPV-16 được xem là thủ phạm của khoảng 60% các ca ung thư cổ tử cung, 80% các ca ung thư hậu môn và 60% số ca ung thư miệng.

Nghiên cứu mới đã tìm hiểu mối liên hệ giữa HPV với dạng ung thư ở vòm sau cổ họng (ung thư hầu họng) trên một nhóm lớn người tham gia.
Ở đầu khảo sát, tất cả những người này đều khỏe mạnh. Họ được lấy mẫu máu để kiểm tra xem trong máu có mặt kháng thể chống lại protein chủ chốt của virus HPV là E6 hay không. Vai trò của E6 là làm bất hoạt một phần hệ thống bảo vệ cơ thể. Như vậy, nếu trong cơ thể xuất hiện kháng thể, nghĩa là HPV đã vượt qua hàng rào phòng thủ và khiến tế bào thay đổi theo hướng ung thư hóa.
Sau một thời gian dài (có trường hợp hơn 10 năm), mẫu máu của họ tiếp tục được thu thập và so sánh với lần lấy trước đó. Trong số đó, 135 người phát triển ung thư họng, và 1.599 người không mắc ung thư.
Nhóm nghiên cứu từ Đại học Oxford phát hiện 35% số người mắc ung thư họng này có kháng thể chống HPV trong mình, so với chưa đầy 1% trong nhóm người không bị ung thư.
Tiến sĩ Ruth Travis, chuyên gia nghiên cứu ung thư tại Oxford, thành viên nhóm nghiên cứu, cho biết: "Kết quả ấn tượng này cung cấp thêm bằng chứng cho thấy nhiễm HPV-16 có thể là nguyên nhân quan trọng gây ung thư hầu họng".
Còn Sara Hiom - giám đốc cơ quan thông tin y tế của Cơ quan nghiên cứu ung thư Anh, thì nhận định: "HPV là một virus cực kỳ phổ biến. Việc thực hành sex an toàn có thể làm giảm nguy cơ nhiễm hoặc lây truyền HPV, nhưng bao cao su không ngăn ngừa hoàn toàn việc lây nhiễm này".
