Grand Slam Ranking: Mexico is on the rise!

August 2010 - The great work of Mexico's former Miss Universe and national director Lupita Jones reached its peak when Jimena Navarrete was crowned Miss Universe 2010, in Las Vegas (the same city where Lupita won the same title, 19 years before) earlier this month. Jimena's conquest put Mexico in 4th place in the Grand Slam Ranking, its best placement ever, and many believe that it could end the year in an incredible third place, ahead of India, which keeps on losing points and prestige in international pageantry.



But Mexico's amazing jump is not the only notable result after the conclusion of the first Grand Slam contest of 2010: Australia, for instance, has gained 5 position, going from 15th to 10th place, returning to the 'top 10' a after over two decades.

In Europe, not only Spain left the 'top 10' (15th), but it also lost the leadership in the Old Continent, which now belongs to Russia (9th).

Other 'movers' in the 'top 50' after their Miss Universe performances were Jamaica (25th, +5), Ukraine (37th, +5), and Ireland (40th, +5).

Belgium keeps on moving up fast: it ended in 75th place in 2008, was 60th in 2009, and started 2010 in the 53rd position, at the doorstep of the 'top 50'.

Albania escalated amazing 19 positions (from 80th to 61st), being the mover of the year so far, while Guatemala went from 91st to 83rd (+18).

The year hasn't started well for Zimbabwe, though. With its Miss Universe 2000's points being divided by 10, and no gain (it did not participate) in Miss Universe 2010, Zimbabwe had a vertiginous fall, from 87th to 114th place (-27).
